St. Matthews Adult Steppers for Health (S.M.A.S.H.)
Business/Organization Name: St. Matthews Adult Steppers for Health (S.M.A.S.H.)
Year Established: This line dancing group was started in 2015 with the only emphasis being dancing in class. After being together for approximately two years the group expanded beyond our weekly group setting. We decided we needed a name to identify our group and S.M.A.S.H was chosen.
Contact: Sallie M. Glover: call (803) 655-7669 or email sallieg@windstream.net
Number of members: We have had over 40 members since 2015, but the average class attendance is 12.
Location(s): John Ford Community Center, 304 Agnes Street, St. Matthews, SC 29135
Our Purpose: Get moving and have fun! Besides learning how to move to the beat, line dancing improves balance, confidence, memory, heart health, and provides an outlet for reducing the daily stresses of life.
Why did you decide to start this organization? The John Ford community center just opened, and was available for activities for the community. Many residents of St. Matthews travel to Orangeburg to line dance; so it made sense for us to start our own classes here in St. Matthews.
What accomplishment are you most proud of? Our group started as a class, dancing only on Thursday evenings, but we’ve really grown to participate in larger community events (Purple Martin Festival, birthday parties, Helen Carson-Peterson Annual Fish Fry, etc.) We have also performed at the Calhoun Convalescence Center! We get the opportunity to review what we’ve learned then have parties and events where we can strut our stuff! S.M.A.S.H members are often seen “getting it on” at many of the events in the area.
What sets you apart from other organizations? Line dancing is something that is suitable for all age groups. Our instructors are friendly, knowledgeable, patient and passionate. Classes are welcoming to all and structured to meet the interest and skill level of all who participate. Instructions also make learning constructive and successful, with the goal of everyone feeling confident and excited!
Do you have any other info you want to share? Those who are already line dancers know the health benefits of line dancing. It’s more than just getting some exercise. It’s about the love of the music and the confidence that comes from mastering a dance! You also form new friendships that last a lifetime. It’s such a healthy addiction. The social aspects of line dancing are huge; the sense of well-being and camaraderie we can have with each other is absolutely wonderful! I’d encourage anyone to get involved!
