Ft. Motte Garden Club

Ft. Motte Garden Club

Year established:  2005

Contact:  Nina Mack

Members:  15

Location:  The Club meets at different locations, which are decided by the hostesses. Sometimes it is at churches in the Fort Motte community and sometimes in members’ homes.

Purpose:  Our club was established by several ladies as a way of getting to know our neighbors.  We get together and plant and maintain several garden plots in the Ft. Motte area. At each meeting we learn something about gardening or other topics.

Why did you decide to join this organization?

I thought it was a good way to meet neighbors I wouldn’t have met otherwise and saw it as a way of developing good community relations by having meetings in various churches.

What accomplishments are you most proud of as a member of this organization?

We work to beautify the community we love and enjoy the unity it has brought us.  We also make pillows for our sick, homebound, bereaved, and convalescent members in the community.  We also support youth participation in summer camp.

What sets you apart from other organizations that people might support?

Our motto is “People before Flowers.” We meet just to enjoy each other’s company. We pay no dues, have no by-laws, and no requirements to be a member. We rely entirely on fundraisers and donations, such as when we sell plants at the Fort Motte Reunion each July. At our December meeting we bring gifts to take to residents at the Convalescent Center in St. Matthews. We pick a “Yard of the Month,” present the home owner with a sign to display in their yard, and it is featured in the Calhoun Times. Also, each spring we take a field trip to attend a play at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston.

Do you have any other info you want to share?

We meet the 4th Tuesday of the month at a destination chosen by the hostess for that month.  People wishing to attend a meeting can call 803-874-1648 for information.
